Finding Grace in the Grind: What It Really Means to "Suffer Well"

Life has a way of throwing complex relationships, difficult circumstances, and unexpected seasons of hardship our way. When we encounter trial after trial, our natural human instinct is to focus entirely on finding a resolution—how do we fix it? How do we get out of it?

But in the latest episode of the Hope City Overtime podcast, the panel unpacked a counter-cultural reality found in the gospel through the letter to the church in Smyrna: Sometimes, the ultimate resolution isn't that the problem gets instantly solved. True resolution is finding everything you need in Christ to remain faithful through it.

Here is how the team broke down what it means to truly suffer well:

1. Shift Your Gaze

Navigating complex seasons or fighting exhausting battles requires shifting your focus above your current circumstances. When we lift our eyes, we find the baseline endurance we need to take the next step.

"My peace isn't in the resolution. My hope isn't in the resolution. My hope is the one who holds all things in his hand. If we can move our mindset and our eyes from the circumstance to the God who's above the circumstance... your heart begins to shift." > — John [38:38]

2. Take Comfort: You Are Fully Known

Jesus doesn’t just observe our pain from a distance; He has a profound, experiential understanding of our grief, our exhaustion, and our hardship. Because He willingly tasted suffering on the cross and through betrayal, He is right there in the tension with you.

"He knows because he experienced the same suffering and temptations that you're going through... Empathy through our savior that has been through the same suffering—I think is a complete game changer." > — Omar [42:15]

3. Embrace the Process

Suffering highlights what matters most, stripping away the temporary distractions of the world and driving us into a deeper dependency on God. It’s a lived experience that shapes our ultimate perspective on eternity.

"Suffering really gives us a better glimpse of what eternity—and the relief that eternity provides... Suffering points me to Christ, and if Christ is the prize, when we get to eternity and we get to spend eternity with him... there's a different perspective because he's my relief to my suffering." > — (Panel Communicator) [22:57]

4. Lean Into Community and Authenticity

Learning to suffer well means unboxing the feelings we've been taught to suppress and allowing ourselves to be honest with God and those around us. We do a disservice to the church when we pretend everything is fine.

"I don't know how we're supposed to teach people how to struggle well when we hide it and we think it is a better—maybe it's a faith move, it could be a pride move. Part of learning how to suffer well is kind of showing others how you suffer, and not being afraid of feeling what you feel." > — Ashley [01:00:22]

Walking Out the Tension

Suffering well doesn't mean pretending everything is fine. It means walking with patience and endurance, confident that you have a Savior who sees you, knows your exact pain, and provides the grace to remain faithful to the end. As the team reminds us, the very filth and depth of the hardships surrounding your suffering can often become the most fertile planting ground for the seeds of the gospel.
