Formed Day 6: The Hidden Air Bubbles

Scripture:

“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’”Isaiah 45:9 (NLT)

Devotional

Before clay can be shaped on the wheel, it has to go through a messy, intense process known as "wedging". Wedging looks like someone vigorously kneading dough, constantly pressing and folding the clay—often 100 to 150 times. It’s violent. It’s tough. But it is absolutely critical.

One of the main reasons potters do this is to remove hidden air bubbles. Air bubbles aren't always visible from the outside, but if they are left inside the clay, they will expand in the intense heat of the kiln and cause the entire vessel to crack or explode.

Spiritually, wedging represents God’s preparation of our hearts. God allows seasons of pressing to expose things we often don’t see in ourselves: pride, unforgiveness, hidden sin, wrong motives, self-reliance, fear, or unbelief. The pressing feels uncomfortable, and it's tempting to yell at God, "Stop, you're doing it wrong!" But God is actually doing a profound work of mercy. Before He shapes our lives for our ultimate purpose, He lovingly presses out what would eventually destroy us.

Reflection

What "hidden air bubble" (like pride, fear, or unforgiveness) might God be using a current season of pressure to expose in your life?

Prayer Prompt

Lord, the pressing in my life feels uncomfortable right now. Forgive me for arguing with You or complaining about the process. I trust that You are pressing out the hidden things that would eventually destroy me. Expose my pride, my fear, and my hidden sins, and prepare me for Your purpose. Amen.
