Formed Day 9: Designed for Function, Not Just Form

Scripture:

“Go down to the potter’s shop, and I will speak to you there.” So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel. — Jeremiah 18:2-3 (NLT)

Devotional

When we think of pottery today, we usually think of decoration—a pretty vase on a shelf or a colorful bowl on a coffee table. But in the time of Jeremiah, people weren't making pretty pots just to display in their homes. Pottery was primarily about function.

The potter was making large jars for storing grain and oil, cooking pots meant to withstand fire, oil lamps for light, and bowls for eating. Not all pottery looked the same, but every single piece had a specific, functional purpose that the potter knew the very moment he began to shape it.

If we are honest with ourselves, many of us never see our ultimate purpose because we don't trust the preparation process. When the violent, critical pressure of the wedging becomes too much, we jump off the table. We get mad at God because we just want to look pretty on a shelf. But God is pressing you because He has a specific function and assignment for your life. Don't quit during the preparation.

Prayer Prompt

Master Potter, I surrender my desire to just look good or have an easy life. I know You have created me for a specific purpose and function in Your Kingdom. When the preparation feels intense, give me the endurance to stay on the table. Form me for Your glory. Amen.
