Formed Day 12: The Pressure of Prayer

Scripture:

“So I did as he told me and found the potter working at his wheel.”Jeremiah 18:3 (NLT)

Devotional

Most people describe their ideal life as one completely void of pressure—no pressure from work, finances, failure, or keeping up with others. But pressure itself isn't the problem; the key question is what kind of pressure is shaping you?

In nature and daily life, the right kind of pressure produces strength and life:

  • Pressure forms diamonds and creates pearls.

  • Pressure turns grapes into wine and olives into oil.

  • Pressure builds physical muscle and maintains balance in our inner ear.

In our spiritual lives, prayer creates healthy, life-giving pressure. Prayer confronts our self-sufficiency and presses us to depend on God. Every time we pray, we are admitting, "God, I need You". Prayer presses our hearts toward His will, presses us to surrender, and presses us directly into His presence.

Reflection

How does viewing prayer as "healthy pressure" change the way you approach your daily time with God?

Prayer Prompt

Father, forgive me for trying to live in my own self-sufficiency. I yield to the pressure of prayer today. Squeeze out my pride and press me closer to Your presence, Your will, and Your heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
