Formed Day 11: What Is at Your Center?
Scripture:
“O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand.” — Jeremiah 18:6 (NLT)
Devotional
Before a potter can pull the walls of a vessel or shape it on the wheel, the clay must first be centered. The potter moves the clay upward—a process called coning—to distribute the weight, then applies downward and inward pressure to guide it to the exact middle. If the clay is not centered, every touch of the potter will distort it.
The world tells us to "find your center" or "center yourself," placing you as the source of your own calm and stability. But carrying that expectation puts a crushing weight on your shoulders.
The Gospel offers a radically different perspective: Jesus is your center. When your center is internal or dependent on your circumstances, a bad day at work or an unexpected crisis can throw off your whole life. But when your center is Jesus—external and unshakeable—you can walk through difficult days while your peace and stability remain completely intact.
Reflection
What are you currently relying on as your center of stability—your own strength, your circumstances, or Jesus?
Prayer Prompt
Lord, I confess that I often try to be my own center and carry weight I was never meant to hold. I place my life back into Your hands on the potter's wheel. Center my heart, thoughts, and life on Jesus today so that my peace remains anchored in You, no matter what happens around me. Amen.
